Ceri Roberts writes: Fashion’s love affair with
lace kicked off last summer when white, cream and candy-coloured lace
dresses became high street hits.
But things have taken a darker turn for autumn, and black lace is now the fashionista’s fabric of choice.
Whether you’re looking for a statement party dress, or just want to incorporate a hint of lace into your everyday look, we've put together this handy guide to help you get a head start on the trend.
Just make sure you've got your best bra ready to go – this is not trend for your well-worn and fading "old faithful" (unfortunately).
1. If you want to shock...
Dior sent sheer black lace dresses down the runway for AW11, creating a look that’s at once dangerous and demure. Abigail Clancy and Lady Gaga have already tried this look in real life, but the rest of us might want to wear a black slip underneath, just so we don’t catch a nasty chill – or get arrested.
2. If you want to look glamorous...
Daisy Lowe is a dab hand at vintage glamour, and she looks stunning in this black lace fishtail gown. Notice how Daisy is showing very little skin as the dress is lined with flesh-toned fabric. This is the key to making this look work, so look out for dresses with linings that match your skin tone.
3. If you want to wear it to work...
Black lace is a great day-to-night option, provided that you think carefully about what you’re wearing it with. You won’t have too much trouble finding lace shirts and blouses like Kim Kardashian’s on the high street. Slip a cami underneath or add a tailored jacket and you can wear it to work. After hours, you can lose the extra layer and show some skin. Just make sure that you’re wearing well-fitting, coordinating bra.
4. If you want to look chic...
For classic look, opt for a LBD with lace detail. The sheer, lacy sleeves on Lauren Laverne’s LBD give a nod to the trend without making a big statement. This is a great way to work the trend without feeling too exposed, and this style of dress is guaranteed to become a wardrobe staple that you’ll wear for years.
5. If you’re a little bit rock ‘n’ roll...
If you don’t *do* girly clothes, look for tops and t-shirts with subtle lace trim. Fearne Cotton’s lingerie-inspired top is a very wearable way to reference the trend – and it’s a great option if you’re bored of wearing black. Add a cardi, denim jacket or a leather biker for the perfect rock chick look.
