Courteney Cox may be separated from husband David Arquette, but besides her successful acting career and 7-year-old daughter Coco, she's had a major home renovation project to get her mind off her troubled marriage this year.

The 46-year-old actress, who tells Elle Decorshe's passionate about building, remodeling, and decorating homes and actually began college course work in architecture before having a change of heart, recently purchased a mid-century house perched high above the Malibu, California, shoreline and turned it into her dream home.
Creating Courteney's Paradise
In addition to the main house, the two-acre property includes guest cottages, a tennis house and court, a screening room, and a saltwater swimming pool. She bought the home in part because it was much more private than her previous abode, which was level with the public beach. "I couldn't take a walk without having my picture taken," she explains in the July/August issue. "I decided with this house to go a completely different route. I wanted it to look like a modern barn."

She started by hiring an architect and interior designer, then leading the team through "intense" three-hour-long weekly planning meetings to make sure everyone was on the same page. "I've been overseeing renovations of my homes for a long time, and I have strong opinions about what I want and why," she admits. Those opinions led to a variety of detailed decisions -- from choosing the specific shade of color for her tennis courts, to building a "hot-dog window" modeled after a food truck so that her chef can prepare snacks and drinks for her guests at the pool, to making sure the home's indoor and outdoor spaces are blurred to create a completely open feel. The outcome? A success. "This is exactly how I want to live," Cox declares.
