Keen-eyed
Apple observers knew that Apple's iPhone 4S had been a hit, despite a
distinct lack of excitement from the tech community.
The phone took only a few hours to switch from 'Available now' to 'Available in one to two weeks' on Apple's website after pre-orders opened.
Now Apple has confirmed that the device whipped up a sales frenzy beyond even its predecessor, selling 1,000,000 units to iPhone 4's 600,000.
It is the fastest-selling Apple product in history - outpacing both models of iPad, the original iPhone and every Mac in history.
Pent-up demand for the handset, the first new iPhone in 15 months could be behind the huge sales figure, which hint that predictions the phone could sell 100 million next year might not be too outlandish.
Many iPhone customers were also in a position to upgrade.
'In the UK, O2 was the first network to carry iPhone, it also has the largest number of people who will be nearing the end of their contract and therefore ready to upgrade,' says Dominic Sunnebo of analysts Kantar Worldpanel.
'In fact, 38% of iPhone customers on O2 have owned their Apple device for at least 18 months.'
'AT&T has 84% of all Apple customers in the US, and 44% of these AT&T iPhone owners have had their Apple mobile for 18 months or more.'
Naturally, Apple were keen to trumpet their results, after many tech websites and reviewers were lukewarm about the new gadget - pointing to the fact its specifications bring it in line with rivals such as Samsung's Galaxy S II, rather than pushing it into the lead.
'We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,' said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
'The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.'

The new iPhone 4S is a barely visible tweak on
the old design. But the upgraded processor and camera seems to have made
up for it where customers are concerned
