Hangover film breaks its own record

Still going strong at the international box-office, 'The Hangover II' has become the highest grossing R-Rated comedy of all time. The film broke the record previously held by the first film in the franchise, proving that audiences still love the wolf pack’s morning after antics.

An R-Rating is used in America to restrict anyone under 17 from seeing a film without adult supervision. It’s normally seen as prohibitive to a film's chances at the box-office, but it’s obviously no barrier when it comes to comedy. 'The Hangover: Part II' passed the £300 million mark this weekend, and is still to be released in some countries.

'The Hangover' was a surprise hit in 2009, so expectations were high for the sequel. Although the critical response was lukewarm at best, audiences flocked to see the film.

Boxofficemojo.com has a comprehensive list of movie grosses and their list of highest grossing domestic R-Rated comedies is revealing.

With the two 'Hangover' films at the top of the pile, there are some surprise entries in the rest of the list.

Who would have thought the 'Scream' spoof 'Scary Movie' would still be one of the top 10 highest grossing adult comedies of all time? There is also another sequel in the list, 'American Pie 2', which did much better than the first in the series.

The oldest film in the list is 'National Lampoon's Animal House', which was originally released in 1978. More recent hits like 'Superbad', 'Wedding Crashers' and 'Knocked Up' flesh out the top 10.
