Spider-Man set to be killed off

Today sees the demise of one of the most iconic names in comic-book lore. Peter Parker, the original Spidey, will be killed off in the latest issue of 'Ultimate Spider-man'.

Although Spider-Man will live on in numerous other Marvel brands, the death in this particular series is still a watershed moment.

The 'Ultimate' series, which has been going for 160 issues, started ten years ago and successfully rejuvenated the fortunes of the web-slinger.

Michael Bendis, the artist behind the momentous issue has spoken of this emotional farewell:

“I won't lie to you, and it's embarrassing to say this out loud, but tears were rolling down my face. I was very emotional in writing it. This is a character that represents such a great deal of my life”

Although this means we won't be seeing Spider-Man in the 'Ultimate' universe any more, there are still plenty of ways to catch Peter Parker and his arachnid antics.

As well as the ongoing 'The Amazing Spider-Man' series, fans can also expect to see him pop up in 'The New Avengers', 'Fantastic Four' and 'Amazing Spider-Man Digital'.

For a while it seemed the calamitous Spider-Man musical would kill off the hero, but even that seems to have found its footing.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' remains the most expensive production ever on Broadway, but despite mixed reviews and early setbacks, box-office returns have been good.

There is also next year's 'The Amazing Spider-Man' movie, starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. It's the first to be released in 3D and the franchise has always made huge profits at the cinema.

It's certain that the character will live on, even after the death of Spider-Man.
