George Clooney and Elisabetta CanalisDimitrios Kambouris/Wireimage.com  Ciao, Elisabetta Canalis. The Italian beauty and George Clooney have said their relationship is finito. But we're sure plenty of guys are hoping this is not the last they hear (or see) of the stunning Italian star.
Word of the breakup caused scorching hot searches on Yahoo! for "Elisabetta Canalis" "Elisabetta Canalis images," and "Elisabetta Canalis boyfriend."
So who is this spurned woman? Arguably the hottest woman in Italy, if Maxim is to be believed. The 32-year-old was born in Sassari, Italy, to a radiologist and a literature teacher.
The rising star moved to Milan to study languages at Università Statale but found her place as a "velina" -- a showgirl --on a hit Italian TV show, "Striscia la Notizia," in 1999, where she stayed until 2002. Maxim describes the show this way: "Think of some crazed melding of a late night show, giant talking puppets," not to mention lots of scantily clad women, "and you get the picture." No surprise that the Sardinian was now a star.
The "it" girl of Italy moved on to model for ad campaigns, and she also hosted MTV Italy's "Total Request Live." The actress also appeared in the American flicks "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" and "Virgin Territory."
The bombshell, known as Eli or La Canalis in her country, caught the eye of Clooney when the two were introduced in Rome. The picture-perfect couple went public with their relationship in 2009 at the Venice Film Festival.

So why the unhappy ending? The relationship may have been doomed from the start. Clooney, who is divorced from "Mad Men" actress Talia Balsam, told CNN's Piers Morgan that marriage is not his destiny. "I was married. So I gave it a shot. I've proven how good I was at it, and I just...I'm allowed one."
Earlier this month, Canalis seemed to be moving in a different direction, telling the Italian magazine Chi, "I am a firm believer in marriage -- in the future I will be married. But for the time being, I am happy as I am."
The actress has since re-thought that happiness. The two said in a joint statement announcing their split, "We are not together anymore. It's very difficult and very personal and we hope everyone can respect our privacy."
