It's now officially the summer season -- not just according to the calendar, but also the launch of Billboard's Summer Songs 2011 ranking, a week-by-week tally of the top songs based on Billboard Hot 100 activity from Memorial Day through Labor Day (i.e., charts dated June 11-Sept. 17).
Adele's ubiquitous "Rolling in the Deep," now in its seventh week atop the Hot 100, easily claims the No. 1 spot on the first installment of Summer Songs, as it has occupied the top slot on the Hot 100 in each of the four weeks that currently make up the chart's data pool to date.
Will Adele's huge head start assure her of earning the No. 1 Summer Song of 2011 crown when our tally wraps up Sept. 8?
Possibly, as her future presence in the Hot 100's top 10 seems all but guaranteed considering its lock atop multiple radio format charts. A look back at 2010 also reveals that Katy Perry's "California Gurls," which was able to go wire-to-wire atop the Summer Songs tally, spent five of its six weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 occurred during the summer measurement span. The song remained in the Hot 100's top 10 during the entire Summer Songs tracking period.
"Rolling in the Deep," meanwhile, has racked up four of its seven chart-topping weeks during this summer's chart tracking stretch. However, Adele's Hot 100 reign could end as early as next week, opening the door for another track to build up enough points to take the final Summer Songs trophy. Both "Give Me Everything," by Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer (No. 2 on Hot 100 and Summer Songs), and "Party Rock Anthem," by LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock (No. 3, Hot 100; No. 4, Summer Songs), are both in the running for the next Hot 100 No. 1, which would ultimately enhance their standing on Summer Songs during the 11 weeks remaining in the survey period.
Perry's "E.T.," featuring Kanye West, claims the No. 3 spot on the Summer Songs chart, though that former Hot 100 No. 1 will almost certainly drop in rank as it winds its way down the big chart's top 10, where it drops 4-5 this week. Expect Perry's fast-rising "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" to hit the Summer Songs top 10 soon.
Bruno Mars' "The Lazy Song" is the No. 5 Summer Song so far, although it slides 5-9 on the Hot 100. Other tracks that could be in for a short Summer Song run due to current Hot 100 declines are "On the Floor, " byJennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull (No. 7), and the Black Eyed Peas' "Just Can't Get Enough" (No. 8).
Summer songs still building on the Hot 100 that should see marked rank improvement on our seasonal survey are "The Edge of Glory" by Lady Gaga (No. 6), Nicki Minaj's "SuperBass" (No. 9) and "The Show Must Go On" by Lupe Fiasco.
