Venus Williams' game looked great in her return to Grand Slam tennis. The five-time Wimbledon champion committed five unforced errors, never faced a break point and needed only 59 minutes to defeat Akgul Amanmuradova 6-3, 6-1 in a first-round match at Wimbledon. Her outfit, however, looked just the opposite.
A debut outfit from her clothing line, eleVen, was a flop on the opening day of Wimbledon, as critics blasted the one-piece outfit that featured short shorts, a flowing v-shaped bodice with a plunging, front zipper and Roman-style shoulder draping. It was something a female superhero who lived in her grandma's house might wear to a nightclub in 1964:
The Associated Press called it "crazy." Reuters went with "bizarre." Venus herself said the jumper was "now."
About the only thing the dress has going for it is that it's white and, therefore, fits into the rules and restrictions of the All England Club. On a list of Venus' worst all-time outfits, this ranked slightly ahead of the U.S. Open fireworks dress but behind the Australian Open "wonderland" getup.
